Bondi Road and The Sunburnt Cow are the same company.  This is no secret – they share a website.  And on the website they have their menus posted.  If you look real quick to the naked eye they appear very similar.  It was with zero hesitation that I agreed to meet Eating Manhattan’s own Holly Rayna Raub for a meal and some food-related conversation at Bondi Road.  Based on my experience at the Sunburnt Cow I expected nothing short of a delicious meal in a relaxed setting anchored by super-sweet alcoholic drinks. summit (noun) 1. the highest point of attainment or aspiration: the summit of one’s ambition.

The Summit Bar, a Soho style cocktail lounge located on Loisaida’s Avenue C, was opened six months ago by Hamid Rashidzada and Greg Seider.  On a recent visit, I had the opportunity to meet Hamid, and the first thing that jumped out at me was how passionate he was about every detail of his establishment.  The name of the bar is clearly not merely an aesthetic choice, or worse — an empty promise.  It is the goal of every one of their menu items: from their interpretations of classic cocktails, to bold new alcoholic inventions, to a snack menu featuring fine meats and artisanal cheeses.

The space, which can hold 60-70 patrons, is minimalistic — exposed brick walls, glass tables, and the kind of bar that lets its liquor speak for itself.  There are couches in the front and rear of the space, where my girlfriend and I sat and sampled some of The Summit Bar’s cocktails. (more…)

It was a dark and stormy night…well, dark.  And quiet.  In fact, it was a Monday night.  Monday night in the restaurant world is not a traditionally busy night.  Most chefs actually use Monday as their day off.  But that didn’t keep my wife and I from checking out The Sunburnt Cow in the East Village.  But I will again emphasize the quiet part – from the start of our meal to the end it was just us, the bar tender/waiter/host and the cooks, which was not necessarily a bad thing. Celebrate Chinese New Year & Valentine’s Day!

Friday, February 5th, 2010

I Love NYValentine’s Day throws us for a loop this year – landing on a Sunday, one week after Super Bowl.  Whether you’re in the afterglow or aftershock of the results of the big game, you’ll no doubt be obligated to step up and treat your lady to a full day of Valentine’s bliss.  But fear not – arranging a romantic dinner or even a brunch is easier than you think.  NYC restaurants are posting enough special deals to make everyone happy.  And even if you’re flying this one solo (again) there’s something for everyone!

RUB BBQ really stands for Righteous Urban BBQ and it certainly lives up to its name. With four smokers on site, each capable of smoking up to 600lbs. of meat, there’s rarely a day where it’s not all used up. What this means for you and me is some of the freshest and smokiest ‘Q around. (more…)

After a wonderful Meatpacking Uncorked at the NYC Wine and Food Festival, we were left in the mood for great cuisine to match the great drinks that we sampled at the event.  Sure, there was food offered, but it wasn’t nearly enough to satiate our appetites.  Luckily for us, just around the corner, Tanuki Tavern had just sprung open its doors the night before and we were among the first to sample their new cuisine. One little block on Park Avenue in the Union Square / Gramercy Park area is littered with restaurants and bars. Between 19th and 20th Streets there are Angelo & Maxies, City Crab, Sugar Cane, Sushi Samba and L’Express. With all of these restaurants available so close to one another, you can literally never have to leave this one-block radius. On a recent Monday night, we took our hungry selves and settled into City Crab. I had only been there once before, back in 1998 or so, and have been looking to get back there ever since. Upon entering the restaurant, the bar area is on the left while just beyond that are high tables so that you can eat in the bar area but still enjoy their full menu. There’s an upstairs and a downstairs dining room which both have great views thanks to the floor to ceiling windows looking onto Park Avenue. (more…)

I had the recent pleasure of meeting an old friend for a couple Bud Lights at the Old Town Bar on 18th Street and Broadway in Manhattan - just north of the Union Square restaurant scene, and down the block from the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace National Historic Site.  I chose this bar to meet for it’s convenient location, it’s history of serving writers, artists, and other famous types, and also the fact that at 2:00 in the afternoon it’s quiet enough to hold down a conversation.
